About Our School

What Makes Us Special

As Tucson Unified's only primary school serving Pre-K to Third Grade, Johnson has a focus on early language, early cognitive development and, as needed, early intervention. The school puts the children first under the motto: "Teach the child, not the program." Teachers work to build relationships and knowledge beyond textbooks and to connect students to their learning.

Johnson is the only Tucson Unified school and one of only five in Arizona that is only Pre-kindergarten to Third Grade.

OMA
Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) for Kindergarten to Second Grade
Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) uses Instrumental Music, Opera, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts to help teach academic content to elementary level students. As an arts integration program, OMA connects Common Core standards to arts standards while providing a creative approach to learning, discovery, and content reinforcement. 1st and 3rd Grade students at Johnson have weekly visits with Hillary Douglas for integrated Visual Art instruction. All students at Johnson have access to resources (to include a monthly CultureGram) from the district's Educational Materials Center.

If you have any questions about Johnson's OMA program, please contact Tara Amy by email.

Johnson Primary Student Council
Student Council Lead Teacher is Mrs. Felicia Martinez
The purpose of student council is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership by organizing and carrying out school activities and service projects. In addition to planning events that contribute to school spirit and community welfare, the student council is the voice of the student body.
The student council has been voted on and there are 2 representatives from each grade level in 2nd and 3rd grades.

Student Council helps out with Love of Reading Week, Can Food Drives, Announcements with Principal Cota and plans for future events.
